The African Opportunity Network (AON) is a support network for African students pursuing an academic career. Members are international researchers, AIMS Lecturers, Western students with ties to Africa and many other supporters who care about the future of science in Africa.
The African Opportunity Network is motivated by seeing the tremendous difficulties that gifted African students face in gaining a chance to work in world-class scientific research. These difficulties arise from many sources, including lack of information, lack of a proper educational infrastructure, lack of resources. As a result, many young scientists who are exceptional on a global level, never get a chance to develop their gift and to work to their full potential. This is a loss both, to them, and to the world.
However, these challenges can often be overcome with the support of well informed and connected individuals. This network aims to give to all Africans, regardless of socioeconomic, educational, and political conditions in their country, a real and fair chance at a world-class education and a connection to the current active research areas in mathematical sciences. A chance for young talented scientists to achieve their dreams, and for the world to benefit from it.
The concept is to connect young Africans thinking of a graduate education in sciences with professional researchers willing to help. The connection is initiated through this network, but continues independently, via direct e-mail correspondence. The scientists support the students by providing individual graduate application guidance, as well as remotely supervising them on small theoretical projects in their respective fields. After sufficient positive contact, the scientist is invited to provide a strong reference letter in support of the student’s application – an invaluable, and often otherwise inaccessible, opportunity for the students.
In addition to the mentorship program, we also host extensive databases with information to help students with their applications, and to connect to the current active research areas.
