Chimère is an online collaborative application for aggregating geographic data (mashup). The application is supported by a map taken from OpenStreetMap. The other data (points of interest, routes) is freely offered by visitors.
Therefore, Chimère makes it possible to "geo-locate" points of interest on a free map (that is produced by OpenStreetMap) and attach additional information (such as titles, descriptions, start dates, end dates, images and hyperlinks).
The development of the Chimère application was supported by Ville de Brest to allow interested members of the working group the possibility to work on the open maps by using a tool that allows them to locate points of interest on an open map provided for free by the OpenStreetMap project.
Originally intended to be used as a shared space for many communities, institutional and civic actors in the Ville de Brest area, the need for allowing, at the same time, each person access to their own database and their own Chimère became obvious.
This observation has committed us to working on the possibility of making the Chimère map more accessible on the Maison du Libre platform (a group bringing people together and/or structures working under free licenses, or similar applications.)
The Chimère application can be accessed as soon as a user account has been created on the Maison du Libre platform. It is a service that complements other services provided by the platform (email, blog, shared calendar...) and is activated by one simple click on the member user space.
This project is by its very nature a simple and effective way to launch the application on a large scale. Launching the application will multiply its open map use and increase its visibility.
In addition, Maison du Libre would like to make it easier to develop a similar platform by providing detailed documentation about how to create a similar one. This documentation is available for free on their website.
