This artificial brooder or “incubator” was developed at the Institut Universitaire (IUT) de Maradi (Republic of Nigeria).
The artificial brooder or “incubator” imitates incubation by hens through the regulation of temperature and relative humidity, ventilation, and regular turning of the eggs.
How it works:
A nearly airtight compartment, often lined with isolating materials, the main component of which is a heat source regulated by a thermostat and, secondarily, a source of humidity and openings to allow air circulation. Often there is also a mechanical device to turn the eggs. At this stage, it is necessary to monitor 4 elements: heat, humidity, ventilation, and movement.
There are 2 types of incubators:
A “static incubator,” where the air contained inside circulates and is exchanged according to temperature and the vents that open to the outside environment.
A “dynamic incubator,” where the air inside is circulated by a ventilation system, which does not eliminate the need to exchange the air with an external air source.
Therefore, the settings differ depending on which type of incubator is used.
The development of an egg brooder is an innovation for the city of Maradi. It fills a need and contributes to increased poultry production in the region. Location: The development of this artificial brooder or incubator was carried out at the University Institute for Technology at Maradi University in the city of Maradi, Republic of Niger.
A value that has no purpose has no value: The invention of egg brooders has the 3 following values: First of all, a value of use. The invention of the brooder helps the local population solve the problem of an insufficient supply of poultry, mainly due to eggs rotting. A value of exchange; if this technique is popularizedmade popular, it could provide the University Institute with significant financial resources to fund research. Finally, it has a value of esteem for the University Institute since it gives the Institude credibility credibility to the institute in the eyes of the scientific community. It also gives the Institute credibility in the eyes of the public who, to justify their indifference to the promotion of research say: “researchers who search and find are sought after but researchers who search and do not find are not sought after.”
The initiative to develop an artificial egg brooder has been well received by the local population. However, the potential to popularize the use of the incubator is limited given the elevated cost of materials needed to build it.
The study and development of an egg brooder is the result of a required two-month student internship completed in a company or a private of public enterprise.
The goal of the internship is to provide students with the opportunity to correctly address a subject that has applications in industry or working life.
