What is the social value of this project? Edit

Fuel prices in Africa today are becoming more and more expensive and the related consequences are affecting other aspects of life (economic, social, environmental, etc.). Urban and semi-urban households are spending more than half of their resources on energy costs (charcoal, fuel and electricity). With increased cost of living, products becomes subject to speculation and are particularly difficult for marginalized populations to access. Installing this kind of device in households decreases their energy costs. The device uses available raw material that is continually produced by members of the household. The baking soda produced after CO2 reduction can also be a complementary source of household revenue for those who use the device.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Safety measures on how to use this device will open the door to a series of communication and training of master craftsmen using a manual designed for that purpose. The manual can be put online or on CD. Control services for civil works and buildings can be the best promotion adapted to the specific conditions of each area and country. Construction materials and materials for recovering existing gas are available on site. Local NPO’s working in sanitation can help spread the device. Financial and technical partners can also help bring the device to urban and rural areas. nmn

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

A simple course in biochemistry was the trigger for young Charles Kolar’s reflection of the in vivo and in vitro digestive processes. Observations helped to determine later that in vitro digestion is produced in the septic system and that CO2 and methane are the main gases that escape. After several build digester tests using recovered materials, the temptation to show a life-sized device from home septic system installation works became too big. It was then that plumbers were asked to volunteer for a first trial in 2004.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Once safety measures for how to use the device are confirmed, NPO’s TFP (Total Factor Productivity), TP technical services and heads of households can help communicate information. A business model has not yet been developed.
