About the project Edit

FixMyStreet is an application that allows citizens inform local authorities of problems that need to be addressed in their neighbourhood (broken streetlights, potholes, poor lighting, unsafe streets, etc...) with the help of a map.

FixMyStreet is a e-democracy project established by mySociety in collaboration with the body UK Citizens Online Democracy, aims to create "social tools that have targeted social impact beyond the Web." MySociety acts as an intermediary between citizens and administrations to develop exchanges, dialogue and participation.

FixMyStreet was launched in early February of 2007 and since then, more than 25,000 problems have been reported in the UK.

Using Fix My Street is very simple. Just enter your postal code or the name of your street and area. You will then have access to a card that allows you to specify the exact location of the problem. Then, you must enter the details of the problem (for example, graffiti on the wall opposite to the gas station). You can also attach a photo to your complaint to add detail. Fix my street ensures that your complaint is automatically sent to local authorities. It is also possible to discuss the problems encountered and subscribe to different forms of information provided in order to stay informed about the progress of their report.

Note: problems are transmitted immediately to the proper government body. As for ideas suggested for improvement, they need to be supported by at least 10 people in order to be transmitted.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

FixMyStreet is a creative crowdsourcing initiative that establishes a link between citizens and municipal institutions.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

By allowing citizens to directly identify problems in their neighbourhoods, cities are able to address problems more quickly and have a better idea of what is happening in the neighbourhoods.

Approximately 45% of problems submitted through FixMyStreet are addressed.

From the citizen's perspective, Fixmystreet introduces citizens to the benefits of using community tools and communities to new Internet uses.

It creates a bridge between stakeholders, promotes exchange and all of it contributes to improving the city.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The British concept of FixMyStreet has been adapted in a number of countries like the Netherlands and Canada where it is maintained by the nonprofit organization It will soon be available in New Zealand.

The tool can easily be implemented in other jurisdictions because it was developed in open source.
