In Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, people get around mostly by using a transport system largely dominated by two motor engines, or motorcycles. Responsible for more than 95% of the atmospheric and noise pollution, and the high number of deadly motorcycle accidents, this transport system (with victims and those responsible) is increasing every year especially during the holidays at the end of the year. This transport system is, therefore, the real source of poor traffic safety in the City of Ouagadougou.
One of the strategies in the fight to improve poor traffic safety is showing motorcycles and cars that have been in accidents at the city’s strategic points (traffic lights, stops and public spaces) which worked very well with a decrease of traffic accident at the end of 2011. This strategy helped create a deterrent in the population who is becoming more and more prudent in traffic.
To create a deterrent for people using a method other than the one usually used (using law enforcement).
To promote an awareness in the populations to reduce accidents in general, particularly at the end of the year in the City of Ouagadougou. This decrease will not only help families who are already poor to spend less and avoid the loss of human life. This is a project that complements actions that already exist to effectively fight to improve poor traffic safety, something that many families experience in fairly specific periods.
Motorcycles and vehicles that have been in accidents are shown at traffic lights, stops and public places. This project is reproducible on a large scale, particularly in large main cities in Burkina like Bobo Dioulasso, Koudougou, Ouahigouya, etc.
The high number of accidents that many families experience, especially during the holidays at the end of the year.
