Lead Us Today or LUT is a Zimbabwean non-profit organization founded in August 2010 by Dalumuzi H. Mhlanga. The missions of Lead Us Today is to inspire, mobilize and empower young Zimbabweans to work together beyond socioeconomic barriers and lead community development efforts.
LUT provides leadership training to high school students who mobilize the wider community and engage them in community development projects that address shared problematic realities. LUT also works directly with communities to establish social businesses that generate income for local entrepreneurs and build students' skills in setting up their own enterprises. As such, LUT pursues its mission by transforming high schools into community learning centers that serve as a space for community members to acquire and produce local knowledge, skills and resources that build their capacity to address their own challenges.
This project is unique and creative because it engage Zimbabwean young people in the community to develop projects and social businesses beyond socioeconomic barrier.
The missions of Lead Us Today is to inspire, mobilize and empower young Zimbabweans to work together beyond socioeconomic barriers and lead community development efforts.
This project can be duplicated following the current model to other communities, cities and countries in Africa.
Young people have the ability and responsibility to exercise leadership in their communities by mobilizing them to engage in learning processes through which they examine and shift values, mindsets and attitudes in ways that shape locally-conceived development agendas and interventions.
This is not a business model although their model is built on the basis of three main assumptions:
- First, young people do not have to wait until they are grown-up adults for them to exercise leadership and make interventions that develop their communities.
- Second, communities cannot rely exclusively on external agents such as governments and international development agencies to address their own challenges.
- Third, development processes require whole communities to examine their shared and conflicting values so that they can change them and align them with their reality as necessary.
