Manufacturing paving stones from salvaged plastic bags mixed with sand. The technique is inexpensive. Plastic waste is melted in a container. The dense paste is passed through a mould to make paving stones. The same plastic waste is used as a combustible which reduces the production investment considerably.
Making paving stones from plastic waste gives value by turning waste into a resource. From noise, pollution and environmentally unfriendliness to a source of profit.
Apart from the dangers of the toxic gas generated from the melted plastic, this form of recycling improves the environment and, therefore, public health. On another level, it creates jobs and profit.
After Mopti, large-scale production was envisioned by a ceramic plant specializing in tile production and other floor-coverings used in the building. Simplification is in progress, particularly domestic use.
Finding a solution to the issue in Mopti. Plastic bags can in the long run create an air-tight barrier in the earth thereby preventing absorption of rain water and lowering groundwater levels which could dry up (linked to global warming).
This project could be productive in many way if we agreed on the fact that it is inevitable that plastic bags are used in business. Take into account its lifetime.
