About the project Edit

This project aims to support local governance of natural resources in the commune of Samorogouan. It consists in providing local communities with organizational and institutional tools and methods for sustainable environmental management. The project will consist in the promotion of systems for the management of natural resources that have been linked to climate change. In order to achieve this, the regulations concerning environmental management to ensure the sustainability of resources and protection of biodiversity will be established. The main actions will contribute to reinforcing the capacity of local stakeholders in the development of integrated management of natural resources.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

This project is unique because it operates with the support of village development committees (VDC), which are local organizations for regional development and management. These committees include specialized environmental subcommittees. The group of committees for these waterfront villages, represented by their duly designated representatives (2 per village), makes up the inter-village committee for the management of shared resources.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

This project for the integrated and sustainable management of natural resources by local communities will serve to significantly reduce actions of environmental destruction. The designation of endangered species will help promote ecosystem protection and help combat climate change. Furthermore, this project will increase the capacity of local elected officials and actors for development to carry out integrated and sustainable development initiative by acquiring new skills and knowledge for community environmental management. Finally, good governance of natural resources will facilitate the regeneration of nature, and increase resources and render them quasi-permanent.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The actions of this initiative will be transmitted to neighbouring communities and its results will be published through project reports. Project information will be disseminated to all stakeholders during committee meetings for project follow-up and evaluation. The principle of intervention and actions of this project guarantee its continued existence. The actions were not imposed but agreed upon internally. The fact that local authorities have finally demonstrated a particular interest in the project guarantees its sustainability and deployment in neighbouring regions. This project could also inspire other communes to rationally manage their natural resources.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

The issue faced by the commune of Samorogouan is related to the responsible management of natural resources. The region is having difficulty adapting to current environmental changes. The commune states that “[their] greatest difficulty is the management of brush fires and agricultural land.”

The commune is faced with the following environmental issues: -The accelerated degradation of soil and forestry resources; -the low technical level in exploitation of forestry resources; -the increasing fragility of local governance of natural resources.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

The current proposal is a social project.
