About the project Edit

RISEAL is a group of structures and individuals (associations, institutions, social entrepreneurs, small businesses, research centres, etc.) that share a common goal of improving living conditions and preserving the environment in Africa through accessibility to sustainable energy solutions.

RISEAL is a South-South information and exchange platform that connects players working directly or indirectly in fields related to energy applications on the
African continent, such as: biomass management, economical firewood equipment (improved fireplaces, ovens, smokehouses, furnaces, etc.), alternative combustibles, biogas, biofuel, solar photovoltaics, and solar thermal, hydraulic and wind energy.

The end goal is to lay the groundwork for the development of energy projects in Africa through the exchange of expertise, field experience and skills to make sustainable energy accessible to local populations.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

This project is based on the development of a computerized communication tool adapted to the African context. The RISEAL portal will give users access to an information database without a permanent internet connection. By regularly connecting to the internet at locations such as internet cafés, users can download and upload the latest updates. The network of members can thus participate in “local sessions” without necessarily having permanent internet access.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

One of this project’s goals is to democratize access to electronic data in Africa. It aims to connect actors in development so that their collective experience may benefit each other’s projects.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Very great; the concept of database consultation with regular updates can be applied to all types of environmental information in locations where internet access is limited.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

RISEAL was developed during a series of meetings between different African players in collaboration with the Au Rythme de l’Afrique associations who spent 19 months (from March 22, 2007 to November 8, 2008) travelling through many different African countries (Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi and Madagascar). Why?

Because these countries have:
-Local actors
-Experience in the field
-Local, adapted energy solutions

Because the following elements are missing:
-Time for local organizations inform themselves
-A directory of local actors
-Centralized data
-An adapted tool for information diffusion

Because there is a need for information sharing.

Because financing African initiatives are useless if the projects are not adapted to the region.

What is the business model of this project? Edit
