Shea almond production is an activity that has reached a new level in Burkina Faso, especially in the provinces of Ziro, Poni and Houet. The process to transform shea nuts into shea butter is one that uses a lot of wood as fuel. Shea butter production is very well-developed in Bama, Koundougou. More than 3,000 women producers are organized in the Union Générale des Productrices des Produits Karité du Houet (UGPPK/H), a general union of shea product producers. The project will be located in the province of Houet.
Along with other countries, Burkina Faso is marked by desertification. Fire wood is the main fuel that the population uses. The energy required in the process of making shea butter is so significant that it uses a lot of wood. Butter production produces a residue called shea almond. The almond is well-processed and can be used as fuel in butter production centres, thereby avoiding cutting down wood and slowing down desertification.
The project helps in the fight against desertification and in that sense, helps protect the environment. Also, it is a revenue-generating activity for UGPPK/H women producers of shea butter.
Shea butter production in Burkina is an activity that women developed across the entire territory from the multidimensional aspect of shea butter in Burkina. The women in several provinces organized themselves into associations like the UGPPK/H, the UGPPK/Ziro etc. Popularizing the technology in the various production units was possible due to their organization.
Desertification in Burkina is a phenomenon that has known a crucial scope. Dealing with the situation, the government initiated activities to stop the cutting of firewood that is used as fuel by more than 80% of the population. Also, other organizations and the PTF work to support the state by popularizing improved stoves.
Shea production units use almond as fuel in the production of shea butter without cutting wood that helps save the environment and is a plus in the fight against global warming.
Women produce and sell shea butter and increase their income.
Money previously spent on wood is saved.
The union manages the economy and reports
