The biodigester is a pit in the soil with a sandstone, brick or cement foundation. It is built to collect animal waste mixed with water to produce gas called biogas. The biogas is, therefore, the result of decomposition of the animal waste and water mixture without using air. In other words, it is a technology that consists of building a pit and collecting hog or cattle waste in a way to start the fermentation process ending with the production of gas called biogas that will be used for cooking and lighting.
This project is unique because the technology creates several uses.
In villages without electricity, the biodigester’s system can produce biogas that provides gas for women to cook and biogas lamp light for children to study.
This initiative has the strong potential for expansion because it responds to a real need within the populations, especially in rural areas and peripheral cities that faces issues of energy, environmental degradation, lack of firewood, etc.
First developed in Asia and Latin America (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Equador, Honduras, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Peru, Salvador, Vietnam), biodigesters have shown their importance and are now used in Africa, in particular in our country.
The biodisgester is, therefore, expandable due to its low cost (has at least 2 to 3 heads of cattle or 6 to 8 heads of hog and at least 25 kg of animal waste daily), multiple benefits (cooking, electricity, livestock, etc.), is easy to install, and women no longer have to collect wood.
Observations:
- environmental pollution due to animal waste from livestock production
- massive desertification of which cutting firewood is a main cause
- the plight of rural women who must carry heavy household loads
Therefore, this technology without a doubt helps improve the plight of women, effects on climate change and protects the environment from degradation.
Using the biodigester can help increase the sustainable production of agro-livestock and fight against household poverty. As a renewable energy source, it is a key sector for development.
