About the project Edit

Zébu Overseas Board is a business that encourages Western investments into a zebu or other type of livestock in Madagascar. A family can then purchase the animal through a sales-type lease and can use it to produce milk, plough their fields, breed veal, or pull a carriage and to produce natural manure. After the initial investment, a P.E.Z. (zebu or zolidarity savings plan) is opened and the overseas investor becomes the owner of the zebu. The family then makes monthly payments of 300 to 600 Euros over of two or three years to eventually pay off the animal and themselves, become the owners. The capital is then reinvested in other agricultural development projects in Madagascar or paid back with interest to the investor.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

The Zébu Overseas Board has developed a original financing system whereby the investor is directly linked to the people benefiting from the investment funds, while, at the same time, promoting organic farming and traditional cattle-rearing. In fact, the investor receives the address of their sponsored family and information about how the zebu is being used. It is even possible to follow the animal’s develop using the website or by visiting in person.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The goal of the Zébu Overseas Board is to help Madagascan farmers to buy the animals they need; specifically targeting poor families who cannot access other types of institutional financing.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

There are other micro-credit initiatives that focus on livestock investment. For example, the Sahara Eliki association launched the “Camel owner plan”, which encourages Westerns to buy camels for the oasis of Djanet in Algeria. By entrusting these animals to local camel-herders, the association aims to both promote this disappearing profession and provide a source of income to the local people.
